Biesanz Stone Company was formed shortly after the Civil
War. The use of limestone in this area began with the need
to improve city sidewalks made of wood. Many miles of this
limestone were installed before the turn of the 20th Century
and met with such success that a city ordinance was passed
in late 1890 specifying stone only for sidewalks. Today, more
than 100 years later, many of these sidewalks are still in
place and demonstrate the tremendous durability of Winona
limestone.
Buildings in this area also began to utilize this Oneota
Dolomite under the trade name Winona Travertine,
so called because solution cavities in the stone give it a
texture approaching that of a spring deposited limestone.
In reality it is a sedimentary limestone of the Ordovician
era, composed mainly of calcium carbonate and magnesium, and
is exceptionally hard. It will highly polish and is classified
as a class A marble.
Our company has, for more than a century, provided natural
stone products for both residential and commercial applications.
These include floor tile, sills, coping, wall panels, split
face veneer as well as a variety of other applications. Our
most recent development is the prefabricated insulated Stone
Panel, which we have successfully produced for twenty years.
